One LARP Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

I have to say that I really enjoyed Martin Scorcese’s latest movie, Shutter Island. This brain-bender is a noir-throwback detective adventure with the twist that (see where I said it’s a twist? If you don’t want to learn more about the twist, don’t go any further than this)

provides a revelation that the story is an elaborate fiction that’s been staged by the doctors on the island to try and reach a breakthrough with Leonardo DiCaprio’s troubled character. By the end of the movie, though, I couldn’t help but think that this was what a LARP (live action roleplaying game) would look like in the hands of a team composed of Hitchcock, Kubrick, and Capra. It didn’t feel precisely like a Scorcese movie to me, but it certainly seemed like a sprawling homage to those other directors.
